The Secret to Choosing Scrapbook Paper? Start with Your Photos…

One of the biggest struggles scrapbookers share with me isn’t creating the layout.
It’s choosing the paper.
With so many beautiful Designer Series Paper options available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and wonder:
Which paper should I use?
Do you choose your favorite paper?
The newest paper?
The colors you always use?
For this week’s Friday Freebie Sketch #26, I’m sharing a different approach.
Start with the photos.

Let the Photos Lead the Way
This layout began with photos from my recent Stampin’ Up! *Incentive Trip to Alaska.
*Disclaimer: The claims published here are not representative of typical Stampin’ Up! demonstrators. The level of sales needed to achieve this result requires significant work and is accomplished by a substantially small percentage of Stampin’ Up! demonstrators.
Before I pulled out a single sheet of Designer Series Paper, I looked closely at the photos and identified the colors that naturally appeared throughout the images. If you look closely at these pictures the ORANGE color is what naturally POPPED out to me. It’s the orange in the carpet. I know…the CARPET not clothing or people.
From there, choosing paper became much easier. I naturally gravitated towards the Brights Painted Patterns Designer Series Paper. I challenged myself to keep the design really simple and just use three colors total with black and white as the “neutrals”. I am a simple scrapbooker. I don’t need every layout to be fancy or multi-layered. My goal is to get photos on pages and document the stories and memories that matter most to me.
The result?
A cohesive layout that highlights the memories while making the colors in the photos stand out and draw your eye in.

Sometimes the Answer Isn’t More Supplies
Many scrapbookers think they need more paper, more embellishments, or more ideas.
But sometimes the solution is much simpler.
Start with the photos.
Let them tell you what colors to use.
Let them guide the story.
And let the memories be the focus.
Happy Crafting!
